Spotlight on: Tillandsia Pohliana

Tillandsia Pohliana, a xeric air plant native to South America, is a silvery air plant with leaves that come to a point, making it an interesting addition to your air plant displays & terrariums. We offer this air plant in sizes from 2" to 8" and ship them green unless a blushing or blooming plant is available.

The name "Tillandsia" is in honor of prominent botanist and Swedish physician, Elias Tillandz. His contributions to botany and his work on the classification of plants led to the creation of the genus Tillandsia, which includes various species of air plants. The specific epithet "Pohliana" is a tribute to Richard Friedrich Pohl, a German botanist, and explorer, who extensively studied the flora of South America.

Tillandsia Pohliana falls under the Kingdom Plantae, Division Magnoliophyta (angiosperms or flowering plants), Class Liliopsida (monocotyledons), and Order Poales. Within the Bromeliaceae family, it is part of the subfamily Tillandsioideae, commonly referred to as air plants or tillandsias.

Tillandsia Pohliana Air Plant

Tillandsia Pohliana boasts a captivating appearance with long, silvery-green leaves that form a rosette-like arrangement. While many air plant species come in various shades of green, Tillandsia Pohliana boasts a unique and captivating silver coloration. This silvery sheen is a result of the dense trichomes covering its leaves, giving it a magical, otherworldly glow. The leaves' silvery hue is a result of the trichomes reflecting light and contributing to the plant's water retention capabilities. As it matures, the plant may produce unusual apricot colored bloom with tiny white flowers.

In its native habitat, Tillandsia Pohliana has developed a unique survival strategy to cope with adverse conditions. During periods of drought, it can enter a state of dormancy, curling its leaves to reduce water loss and conserve energy until conditions become favorable again.

As a popular ornamental plant, Tillandsia Pohliana is highly favored for its low maintenance requirements. It can be cultivated not only on tree branches but also on various surfaces, such as driftwood, stones, and even mounted on decorative pieces like shells or glass orbs.
